Bachelor of Science in Music Technology

The Music Technology program, leading to the B.S. degree, was established at UNCA in 1982. We have a wide array of analog and digital recording equipment, including two Pro Tools HD recording systems with 96 I/O interfaces, 15 Pro Tools LE systems with Digi003, 002, and M-Box interfaces, and 16 and 24 track 1" multi-track analog tape machines. In our main studio control room, we are installing the newly developed SSL AWS 900+ recording and mixing console. This professional hybrid analog console also functions as a digital control surface for one of our Pro Tools HD systems. We have an electronic music lab fully-outfitted with gear invented and built by electronic music pioneer (and former UNCA Music Professor) Dr. Bob Moog. Courses are taught in UNCA's recording studio, our 5.1 surround sound mixing/editing/mastering studio, and our 14-station electronic keyboard classroom.

NOTE: An Audition is Required to be considered for admission to the B.S. in Music Technology Degree Program

Students wishing admittance to the B.S. degree program in Music Technology must first satisfy the LANG 120 requirement. The student must also 1) demonstrate piano competency through the MUSC 102 level (or take Class Piano I & II); 2) successfully complete MUSC 201 and 231; and 3) pass an instrumental or vocal audition placing them into MUSC 291 (or, after passing an audition, take Applied Music 191 & 192). Audition guidelines are available on this website. In order to begin the Audio Engineering/Recording Studio Practicum sequence of courses, you must be a declared music major who has also taken PHYS102 Physics of Sound and Music.

Music majors pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree must complete a minimum of two semesters of ensembles recommended by the Director of the Music Technology Program and approved in writing by the department chair.

All B.S. candidates are required to complete a senior recording or research project and pass Senior Comprehensive Examinations in Music Theory, Music History, Audio Engineering Technology and oral competency. Internships (up to 6 hours) are available (but not required) to qualified students.

This Sample Curriculum is provided as an aid to the student. It is not the definitive statement of degree requirements. It is the sole responsibility of the student to know and satisfy his or her degree requirements. When in question, consult the catalog published during the year you were accepted into the degree program at UNCA. Also refer to Department of Music guidelines for additional requirements. The Office of the Registrar can also provide information and assistance.
